Holiday Farmers Market Sunday, Nov. 13th!

Believe it or not, the holiday season is just around the corner!  Make it your goal this season to put your holiday dollars right back into the community by buying gifts made by local artisans and cooking with meats, cheeses and vegetables purchased from small, local farmers.  Stop by Bachman’s Garden Center (6010 Lyndale Ave. S) from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm on Sunday, November 13th to connect with local farmers, chat with neighbors and stock up on local foods and gifts for the chilly months ahead!

Plenty of produce will still be available at the November Holiday Market! Vendors will have root veggies such as beets, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions and carrots, along with cold hearty cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts, kale, and cabbage.  Several vendors will have apples which can store for up to six months in the fridge, so stock up!

Astound your holiday guests with the amazing local meats and cheeses. Pork, lamb, beef and chicken will all be available along with delectable cheeses made with goat, sheep and cow’s milk.

If you’re looking for thoughtful gifts for the holidays, there will be plenty of craft vendors at the market along with food vendors carrying non-perishable items.  Jams, honey and maple syrup make great stocking stuffers! Hand knitted items, soap, jewelry, and printed towels are all can’t miss gifts.

The November market is a fun way kick off to the winter season.  Take the morning slow and enjoy a beer from Eastlake Brewery or a glass of wine while you shop!  Several vendors will have delicious options for breakfast or lunch and live music from the Saint Paul Mudsteppers and Brian Peterson will be keeping the atmosphere festive.

Farmers Market shoppers are eligible for a discount at Bachman’s Garden Center. Mention “HolidayMarket” at the store registers to get $5 off a $25+ Bachman’s purchase. Valid 11/13, on regular-priced in-store items only; market goods not included.

Mark your calendar for the three additional Neighborhood Roots Winter Markets on January 28th, February 25th, and March 25th (Saturdays).

Volunteers and board members wanted!

It takes a lot of behind the scenes planning and heavy-lifting to make our farmers markets happen, and we couldn’t do it without the help of our dedicated volunteers and board members! If you’re someone who loves that Fulton, Kingfield, or Nokomis is ‘your’ market – or you shop all the markets! – consider pitching in and getting involved.

We need volunteers every market day for set-up, clean-up, and occasional special events. If you have more time to give beyond just on market days, our board of directors is looking for new recruits. These folks – currently 13 residents from across South Minneapolis – help set the direction of our Neighborhood Roots organization and further our mission of bringing neighbors together to buy, eat, and learn about local food. They participate in annual strategic planning, attend regular board meetings, and serve on one of four committees: Executive, Marketing, Development, or Operations. Specific skills that we’re currently looking for among new board members include backgrounds in fundraising, web development, or local food policy.

If you have any of these skills or others to share, we’d love to hear from you. A full position description is included below. For more information, to attend a meeting, and / or to get connected to current board members for any question you might have, get in touch with Neighborhood Roots’ Executive Director, Alex Cortes, at alex@neighborhoodrootsmn.org

We will also be hosting “meet and greets” with board members at the markets on:
Fulton: Saturday, 8/20, 9am – 11am
Kingfield: Sunday, 8/28, 9:30am – 11am
Nokomis: Wednesday, 9/7, 6:30pm – 7:30pm
Can’t make these? Stop by the market information booth at any point to say hi.

Board Member Job Description.

Volunteering at the markets can consist of many activities, including physical set up and tear down, helping out with special activities, serving as greeters, talking and building relationships with vendors, filling in for staff, as needed, and general troubleshooting.

Regular expectations and duties include:

  1. Regularly attends board meetings, committee meetings, market events and related meetings.

  2. Makes serious commitment to participate actively in committee work; each board member is required to participate on at least one committee (executive, marketing, sponsorship/development and/or operations and events).

  3. Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time, including regular participation at the markets.

  4. Stays informed about committee matters, prepares themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports.

  5. Gets to know other board members and committee members and builds a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus.

  6. Is an active participant in the board’s annual evaluation and strategic planning efforts.

July is “Make my market happen” month

What if you didn’t have your favorite farmers market to go to this Saturday or Sunday morning or Wednesday night? What if instead of a bustling market where you can run into your neighbors amidst healthy food, local crafts and music you found an empty parking lot?

It’s a little dramatic to imagine the markets not being there, but the point is a lot that goes into making the Kingfield, Fulton and Nokomis markets happen each week. In fact, it takes two full-time and one part-time staff along with an army of volunteers to pull it off. There are costs for tables, tents, printing, insurance, permits, weekly entertainment, electricity, and salaries for our small but dedicated staff (which we're proud to say includes health care coverage).

You may be surprised that vendor fees only cover about 40% of what it costs to operate the markets.

We keep vendor fees low to help nurture and support these local farmers and entrepreneurs. You may be surprised that vendor fees only cover about 40% of what it costs to operate the markets. Beyond that, we rely on sponsorship from local businesses and donations from individuals. July is when we’re asking the community to step up and help make the markets happen.

Three ways to support the markets this month!

  1. Buy a raffle ticket at the market -- One ticket for $5 or five tickets for $20. Prizes include a Opus Zermatt bike donated by Farmstead Bike Shop and a Weber Grill donated by Nicollet Ace Hardware, and a market basket filled with products sold at our markets.

  2. Attend the “Neighborhood Rootenanny” the evening of July 30th -- Tickets are $10 and will be available for purchase at all our markets and online.

  3. Simply donate to the markets -- Make a donation here if you simply like going to the markets and want them to continue.

Our goal in July is to reach a goal of $5,000 in fundraising. It’s up to you to make the market happen and your financial support is greatly appreciated.

See you at the market!
