Rachel Henderson and Anton Ptak
Have you always been a farmer?
Nope! We started planting our 5.5-acre mixed- fruit orchard in 2009, and started selling berries and apples at the Fulton Farmers Market in 2011. We were living in Minneapolis and farming on weekends until 2014, when we finished building our “farm” house. Anton continues to work from home as a renewable energy consultant.
What’s your favorite or least favorite vegetable?
Our favorite fruit is black currants — they have a really unique flavor, are super high in vitamins and anti-oxidents, and make a great juice or soda!
What’s your favorite thing to get from other vendors at the market?
Beets, carrots, and eggplant (veggies we don’t grow). Also pizza from Big River!
Do you have a favorite market memory?
We love the beginning of the season (which is July for us!) and seeing everyone again.
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten about farming / your business?
To limit capital investments (tractors, machinery, coolers, trucks, infrastructure) in the beginning until we figure out what we really NEED.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?
To control the rain!
What do you do when you’re not doing work for your farm?
Enjoying our 2-year old son, Cecil! Besides that, Anton likes building and tinkering with things, and Rachel lovest o read and make stuff.
